Chapter 13: The Ties That Bind
Anika stood still, watching as Detective Martinez and his team escorted Rowe to the waiting patrol car. The bear, still positioned in the bay, hadn’t moved, but its gaze followed Rowe every step of the way, its amber eyes burning with an intensity that sent a chill down her spine. It was as though the animal knew exactly what was happening and was silently observing its part in this tangled web.
Anika’s thoughts were a whirlwind. The discovery of Rowe’s connection to the abductions, the way he had so easily manipulated the situation—she felt a deep, gnawing disgust. But what troubled her more was the bear’s involvement. It wasn’t just an animal caught in the middle of human chaos; it was a player, a trained one, and possibly more sentient than anyone had realized. Its connection to Evan seemed far too deliberate.
Rowe’s words echoed in her mind. The bear… it was supposed to help him. Keep him safe. Safe from what? Anika didn’t buy the story. There was something far darker behind it—something that tied Rowe, the bear, and Evan together in a twisted knot.
As Rowe was pushed into the back of the patrol car, he shot one last glance at the bear, his face pale and conflicted. Anika caught a glimpse of something vulnerable in him, but it was quickly masked by his hardened expression. Was he regretting his choices, or was he simply a man whose lies were finally unraveling?
She turned away from the scene, her eyes drifting back to the hospital doors where Evan still lay, unconscious but stable. The boy had been through something horrific, something that had left him with both physical and emotional scars. And yet, his quiet trust in the bear—the bond they shared—spoke of something deeper. Evan had been protected, whether by instinct or design, by a creature who had no obligation to him.
Anika felt the weight of the moment. She had to find out everything—the why behind the bear’s presence and its link to Evan’s abduction. But the more she thought about it, the more questions arose. Why had the bear stayed so close to the hospital? Why hadn’t it tried to escape into the wild once its mission was complete? And what exactly had Rowe been doing to involve an animal in this twisted scheme?
Suddenly, there was a noise behind her, a soft rustling. She turned, and her breath caught in her throat.
The bear had moved.
It was slowly crossing the parking lot, heading directly toward the woods.
Was it leaving? Or was it leading them somewhere?
Anika’s heart skipped a beat. She had no choice but to follow.
To be continued…
