Chapter 1: The Bear’s Arrival

The storm was relentless, driving rain sideways against the ambulance bay of Pine Valley Regional Hospital. The floodlights cast long shadows across the lot, and the wind howled like a living thing, rattling the glass doors. Security guard Mark Simmons stepped into the glow of the floodlights, squinting into the storm. He froze, his eyes widening in disbelief.

Under the canopy, illuminated by the harsh light, stood something massive. Brown fur matted with mud, its large form looming in the rain, unmoving. Across its broad shoulders lay a small, limp body. A barefoot boy, drenched and cold, hung over the bear’s back, his skin pale, hair plastered to the animal’s fur. The bear didn’t advance, staying just at the edge of the painted yellow lines, as if respecting some invisible boundary.

Mark’s heart raced. “What the hell…” he murmured under his breath. His hand hovered over his radio, but the words were slow to come. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Bears weren’t supposed to be in hospital parking lots—especially not with children on their backs. He blinked, wondering if he was seeing things, but the animal was still there, massive and unmoving.

The sound of sirens wailed from somewhere in the distance, but the bear didn’t budge. Mark grabbed his radio. “Code Red—potential trauma under the ambulance canopy. Send help, now.”

Dr. Anika Sorel stepped through the hospital’s doors with two EMTs, her face set in a determined expression despite the rain that needled her skin. Her sharp eyes scanned the scene before zeroing in on the bear. She’d seen plenty of trauma in her career, but nothing like this.

“Stay calm,” Anika called out to the EMTs, already assessing the situation. She stepped forward cautiously, her gaze locked on the animal. “No sudden moves.” The bear shifted its weight slightly, and with a slow, deliberate roll, the boy slid from the animal’s back, coming into Anika’s reach.

She caught him just in time, feeling his cold, fragile body in her arms. The pulse was faint, barely there. “Warm blankets, now!” she shouted as she assessed the boy’s condition. His lips moved weakly, and Anika leaned closer to hear him murmur, “Cold… river…”

The words fogged in the air like smoke, and Anika’s heart sank.

“Get him to Trauma One,” she ordered, motioning for the team to lift the boy onto a gurney. As the EMTs rushed him inside, the bear stood its ground, lowering its head and waiting.

Mark looked back, his mouth dry. “It’s just standing there. Watching.”

Anika stayed just outside the doors, glancing back at the bear. “It’s guarding him,” she whispered, but there was more to this than a simple animal’s instincts. “Something isn’t right.”

The bear had a collar. And that was only the beginning of the mystery.

But for now, the boy’s life was the priority.

As the doors slid shut, Anika could only wonder what the animal’s next move would be—and what the boy had been through before he had arrived at their doorstep.

The storm outside seemed to rage harder, as if the night itself was about to reveal its darkest secrets.
